Brush Hog Tail Wheel Repair for a Local Farm
Brush Hog Tail Wheel Repair – McCarty Fabrication
We recently completed a tail wheel repair on a brush hog for a local farmer who was in the middle of mowing when the rear wheel assembly failed. The original spindle had broken free from years of work, leaving the brush hog dragging on the ground and putting unnecessary stress on the tractor.
Tail wheel failures are one of the most common issues with older rotary cutters, and this job was a perfect example of the type of repair we handle every week here at McCarty Fabrication.
Diagnosing the Problem
When the customer brought the brush hog in, the tail wheel assembly had completely separated from the yoke. The factory weld had failed and the spindle was bent. Instead of patching it, we rebuilt the entire assembly so it would hold up long-term.
Fabricating a New Spindle & Rebuilding the Assembly
To repair the implement correctly, we:
Removed the damaged spindle and cleaned the broken welds
Machined a new heavy-duty spindle to proper dimensions
Rebuilt the mounting plate for a stronger weld surface
Installed the new spindle with full-penetration welds
Reassembled the tail wheel and confirmed smooth rotation
This repair put the brush hog back into working condition and gave the customer a far stronger setup than the original factory design.
