Trailer Repair – Broken Spring Hanger Reweld & Frame Patch (Corbin, KY)
We had a customer bring in a utility trailer with a broken spring hanger that had completely torn away from the frame. When this happens, the trailer becomes unsafe to haul and can cause alignment issues, tire wear, or even loss of control on the road. Before anything worse happened, he brought it to McCarty Fabrication in Corbin, Kentucky for repair.
For this job, we:
1. Assessed the damage
The spring hanger mount ripped away from the original frame rail, leaving thin weakened steel and a stress crack across the frame. This is a common failure on older or heavily loaded trailers.
2. Prepped & repaired the frame
We cut back to solid material, cleaned the area, and patched the frame rail with new steel plate. Reinforcing the weakened area ensures the fix is stronger than it was originally.
3. Realigned and welded the new spring hanger
Once the frame was reinforced, we squared up the hanger, checked axle alignment, then welded the hanger back in place with strong full-penetration welds.
The end result — a solid repair that will hold up to regular use, and a customer who can get back to hauling safely.
Why Trailer Hangers Break
Spring hangers often fail when:
The trailer is overloaded
Rust or thin steel weakens the frame
Welds crack from excessive stress
Axle torque or potholes cause flexing
Old factory welds give out over time
The good news? Most trailer hanger failures are repairable, and reinforcement like we did here prevents repeat breakage.
